Statement by Larry Rousseau on distractions in the media

There are political reasons why distractions have had a primary place in the media, and it won't take a rocket scientist to figure out why. Distractions take our minds and our efforts off of the real issues that face Canadians on a daily basis, and yes, who often need a break from the monotony of one or two main issues.

Jack Layton, 1950-2011

We are saddened and we regret to learn that the Honourable Jack Layton, who recently left his role as federal Leader of the Opposition to deal with cancer, a personal battle that he waged with grace and strength, passed away this morning. Our hearts and sympathies go out to his wife, Olivia, his two children, and all of Jack's family on this sad and tragic day in Canadian history. The promise of Jack's leadership inspires us all to continue the great work of moving progressive values and successes to the fore of Canadian society. All social democrats everywhere will remember with pride Jack's outstanding contribution to the betterment of Canadians from coast to coast to coast. May Jack rest in peace, and may we long remember him in our hearts and minds.

Rental market in Quebec

There is a housing shortage in Quebec that has lasted more than a decade and which has become a permanent condition that favours the owners. Investments in the rental market yield very generous returns and the mechanism of pricing used by the Quebec Rental Board, though imperfect, is a bulwark against unsustainable rent increases. Larry Rousseau elected NCR Regional Executive Vice President

During their convention in Ottawa, Ontario, from June 3-5, delegates at the PSAC-National Capital Region convention elected Larry Rousseau as the Regional Executive Vice President.  Rousseau was a Regional Vice President with the National Component of the Union, and an employee of Statistics Canada. He has been active in the labour movement since he started work in the mail room of the Canadian Labour Congress at the age of 18.  Rousseau has held several positions in the union, and in the labour movement.

The message coming from the convention is that the government should know that the PSAC will use all means at its disposal to enforce collective agreements and to protect its members from an erosion of their rights.  The union is also committed to work to ensure our quality public services remain avaliable to all Canadians.

Rousseau stated that he was committed to defending the rights of PSAC members in the National Capital Region that are now under attack. He said all PSAC members need to come together in solidarity to oppose cuts and reductions in quality public services.

Re-elected as Alternate Regional Executive Vice President was Daniel Charron.

Retirement security for everyone! - Be part of the CLC campaign

Canada is at a crossroads, just like it was forty years ago when it was time to do something about our health care system. Today, we need to do something about retirement income, and we need to do it soon.

It’s time to change some things. The problem with Canada’s retirement income system has become so obvious that even bank economists have started to admit the RRSP approach has failed. There’s too much risk and not enough security to ensure that, after a lifetime of work, people can retire and live out their last years in dignity.

The federal and provincial governments must: Phase in a doubling of payouts from the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and the Quebec Pension Plan (QPP). Immediately increase Old Age Security (OAS) and the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) for all retirees.

You can play a part in this campaign. Visit the CLC website, tell your MP you support expanding the CPP, and discuss this issue with family and friends. Posted on May 25.
