Thousand of members, tons of influence
More than 50,000 PSAC members reside in one of the 16 ridings of the National Capital Region. These members will have the right to vote on October 14, and in some ridings, their number can make a difference.
Gatineau is the largest concentration of PSAC members in Canada, with 5,871 members. According to the figures of the 2005 general election, 83,480 people were registered to vote in that riding, which means that one in every 14 voters is a PSAC member. In Hull-Aylmer, it is almost the same percentage: with 5,723 members, it is one of every 15 voters that are PSAC members.
In Ottawa-Orléans, with 5,253 members, PSAC represent 6% of the voters. In Ottawa Centre, one voter out of 22 is a PSAC member. And in Ottawa-Orléans, Gatineau and Hull-Aylmer, the winning margin for each of the candidates was inferior to the number of PSAC members living in the riding. No wonder candidates are so eager to accept our invitation to the debates on September 29 and 30!
